A Wildflower Alphabet. Lettering Design by Suzanne Moore. Designed & Illustrated by Alan James Robinson.

Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, 2014. One of a proposed 10 copies, (probably not executed) all on Winsor Newton 90# Watercolor paper Hotpress paper, each copy signed and numbered by the artist, Alan James Robinson. Page size: 5 x 8.5 inches; 38pp. Bound by Peter Geraty at Praxis Bindery: accordion style with yellow cloth over boards, title stamped in gold gilt on front panel, housed in custom-made green cloth over boards clamshell box, with title stamped on front cover of slipcase. Designed by Alan James Robinson, using lettering design by Suzanne Moore originally created for A FOWL ALPHABET, the alphabet is represented by American wildflowers and their attendant insects with the titlepage, colophon and letters of the alphabet and common names of the flowers printed giclee on an Epson 9890 Giclee Printer. The 26 wildflowers and 2 butterflies are done free hand (serving as the template for the giclee edition). The wildflowers range from Red Clover to Ladyslipper to Jack-in-the-Pulpit to Knotweed and include bees, hummingbirds, spiders, and butterflies. The colors are so strong and vibrant; they belie the usual notion of etiolated watercolors. The artist, who draws with color, mixes transparent and opaque watercolors in glazing and uses pure watercolor in antique drawing pen nibs resulting in a preciseness and detail not often associated with watercolor. The alphabet in cherry red, but does not overpower the floral images; rather it boldly introduces them. Botanically accurate, these colorful, common beauties of the plant world will seem familiar, but no less welcome, to the viewer / reader. Their common names are printed in blue. This is the first book from Alan James Robinson in several years. It is lovely and true to the natural world which has always inspired this artist. Item #10471
