Silent Sentinels. We've Been Holding This Sign for 100 years.

Boston, MA: 2018. Artist's book, one of 35 copies, all on Magnani Pescia, in warm white for the signs and grey for the pages, colophon printed letterpress in black on the inside back wrapper with the artist's name printed as is the date, signed, numbered and dated in pencil by the artist at bottom of back wrapper. Page size: 5-3/4 x 3-1/2 inches, folding out to 21 inches. Bound: accordion style in folding slipcase of St. Armand Ochre paper as well as Hahnemuhle Ingres over museum board, wrapper executed by Erin Fletcher of Herringbone Bindery. Letterpress printing by Rob Charlton of Goosefish Press. Laura Davidson's images are linoleum block printed with hand coloring in ink. The fence was done with a stencil in ink. The signs carried by the Suffragists read, "Mr. President How Long must women wait for liberty" and "We shall fight for the things we have always carried nearest to our hearts". Laura Davidson's colophon tells the reader that the women were arrested and held in horrific conditions, including forced feeding. Three years later, the suffragists had managed to turn the tide of publci opinion and the 19th amendment was passed. Item #11518
