The text, a single sheet of 12 haiku by the author / artist, printed letterpress from polymer plates by him in Cheltenham Book and Bold on a Vandercook Universal 1 in green ink at Maine Media Workshop. The 12 accompanying prints were created monoprint style with loose registration using natural leaf and tree stencils on glycerin and gelatin plate, with the exception of the fish which was a moulded impression. The nature / monoprints were accomplished in Speedball Water-Based Black Printing Ink.
The haiku - as well as the monoprints - explore the life of a leaf from birth to death and back again. Changing seasons, long of interest to the author / artist, are exemplified by trees and the leaf as a symbol of that change. With THE LIFE OF A LEAF, the reader / viewer follows nature's cycle in word and image with the guiding aesthetic of Richard Reitz Smith. Item #11273
