Miami Beach, FL: 2011. Artist's book, on Fabriano paper, signed by the artist on a laid in colophon, Rosemarie Chiarlone, and dated 2011. Page size: 15 x 12-1/2 inches; 20pp; 8 of which contain Susan Weiner's poem, YIN YANG. The text is lettered by hand in pinprick perforations by Rosemarie Chiarlone, with each page trimmed to form reversing curves with the center of the book forming an oval from the reverse-cut of each succeeding page. Bound by Cynthia Fields-Belanger at Gold Leaf Bindery in ivory Canson French paper, hand-painted label on title page in black on silver gilt ground with additional label of pinpricks within oval surrounded by silver gilt border, housed in custom-made ivory cloth over boards clamshell box with label on spine on white paper printed in black with artist and title. The colophon is hand lettered by the artist and laid into the back at the doublure.
The poem reads, "Despite / daily loss / hope dances / in a shadow box / love sings / between the raindrops / faster than light / dualities collide." The text itself is produced using an ancient paper art form: pin prick. This means of reproducing the text also forms the art. The artist has used various sized holes, made by perforating the paper to form the words of the poem. The letters of each word are in lower-case script, the words placed on the cut-out arabesque of the page to form another arabesque (think Matisse's dancing nudes). The method of creating the text by pinprick is ingenious. The pinholes that form each letter of the text let in light - as do the words of the poem. They also form an intricate, aesthetic design. As original a book as we've handled, this is a treasure. Rosemarie Chiarlone, a Miami-based artist, has had numerous solo exhibitions, including at the NY Center for Book Arts and the Miami-Dade Library System. Item #11127
