Composite Impressions. Julie Flying Fish Press. Chen.

Composite Impressions.

Berkeley, CA: Flying Fish Press, 2015. Artist's book, one of 50 copies, on various papers, book board, each copy signed by the artist / publisher, Julie Chen, on the colophon. Page size: 7.75 x 9.75 x 2.5 inches; 22pp. Bound by the artist: brown cloth over boards with title in two recessed blocks on front panel and on spine, "pages" hinged with gold-flecked brown Japanese book cloth, each page a three-dimensional oval display of ferns and flowers copied from the Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries, New Zealand, and the flowers from the University of Washington Libraries copy of Das Reich der Blumenkonigin. The images were digitally printed, as was the text. Each page is a cut-out oval, gilt-bordered, mat board depicting ferns on a pale green ground superimposed with brightly colored flowers, digitally cut out to show only the flower and stem, over the copied fern image. In combining these two separate collections (ferns and flowers) a new reality is created, the flowers printed on board and affixed on top of the fern images and then superimposed with text banners. The artist writes that the text "poses questions about the meaning of the reading experience, and asks the reader to assess his or her own reading process as it is occurring, both through interaction with the text and through interaction with the physical format of the book itself." A lovely book and book object, with the text just provocative enough. Item #11126
