Unique Artist's book, one of a series of seven titles, containing the verse of Emily Dickinson, hand-painted and lettered by Nancy Leavitt, all on Katie MacGregor handmade papers, each signed by the artist, Nancy Leavitt. Page size: 10-1/4 x 6 inches, 20pp. (12 of which are painted and/or lettered) in each of the seven titles. In addition, there is a small (4-1/4 x 7-1/2 inch) sheet laid in printed with the story of the title of the series, SWEET THINGS WRAPPED IN WORDS, signed by Ms. Leavitt in pencil and embellished with an original watercolor of a flower that is in the same colors as that on the front panel of the binding. Bound by Joelle Leavitt Webber at the Mermaid Bindery: hand sewn and bound in raspberry-colored silk, housed in custom-made matching box, label on front panel hand painted by Ms. Leavitt with a single flower and stem and collaged as well as hand lettered white paper label lettered in black on spine. Each of the books in the series has the same hand-lettered introduction composed by Ms. Leavitt noting Emily Dickinson's deep involvement with the natural world around her, especially the world of flowers. There are six of Ms. Dickinson's verses in this volume (#180, 137, 95, 339, 1058, 849)). The brilliant double-page spread of verse #65 ("My nosegays are for Captives - ") features Ms. Dickinson's beloved daisies and pink flowers (roses?) tied with a pink bow. The printed definition of daisy, taken from an old dictionary, is collaged as a stem of one of the daisy heads, while the definition of "nose-gay" is collaged among the other stems. Closing with verse #869, "The good will of a flowerÂ…" and the image of small pink leaves the reader in no doubt of the author and artist's love of the natural world, which the reader is seduced into sharing.Ms. Leavitt has organized a number of poems by Emily Dickinson into seven reoccurring themes she found particularly appealing and that would lend themselves to book format. The seven books themes are: Spring, Summer, Woods, Garden, Earth, Gentian, and Rose. All, of course, are concerned with the garden and earth's yearly renewal and are, for any gardener, irresistible. The texts are lettered in a modernized Carolingian hand in Sumi ink and watercolor that Ms. Leavitt developed after studying original Dickinson manuscripts. Ms. Leavitt has embellished the pages with original watercolors of various sizes as well as collage elements. Each poem has the "Johnson number," that is, the numbered assigned by Thomas H. Johnson, Editor in THE POEMS OF EMILY DICKINSON published by The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press (1983) collaged somewhere on the watercolor near the poem.

Each of the books in the series has the same hand-lettered introduction composed by Ms. Leavitt noting Emily Dickinson's deep involvement with the natural world around her, especially the world of flowers. There are six of Ms. Dickinson's verses in this volume (#74, 2, 6, 404, 82, 41). The watercolor double-page spread of four trees reflect the verse (#6) with pink woods and brown woods. By the suggested outlines of the trees, the reader / viewer has the sense of slow motion with the trees budding and changing colors before us. Dickinson's verse is well served.Ms. Leavitt has organized a number of poems by Emily Dickinson into seven reoccurring themes she found particularly appealing and that would lend themselves to book format. Each of the books in the series has the same hand-lettered introduction composed by Ms. Leavitt noting Emily Dickinson's deep involvement with the natural world around her, especially the world of flowers. There are seven of Ms. Dickinson's verses in this volume (#63, 90, 134, 361, 22, 81, and 905). The watercolors of small violets sprouting along the bottom of a double-page spread with a tiny printed dictionary definition collaged below (where their roots would be) stand as announcement of Spring as do the emerging daffodil followed by the full-page image of that yellow beauty. Fragile and tentative, these heralds nonetheless are real inhabitants of our natural world, provoking such positive response as the verses of Emily Dickinson.Ms. Leavitt has organized a number of poems by Emily Dickinson into seven reoccurring themes she found particularly appealing and that would lend themselves to book format. Artist's book, artist's proof copy, one of 6 deluxe copies plus 3 artist's proof copies, bound in vellum, from a total issue of 71 (55 regular copies ), all on Mohawk Via Superfine Eggshell 100# text paper, each signed and numbered in gold ink by the author / artist, Dorothy Simpson Krause. Page size: 5 x 7-1/8 inches; 56pp. Bound: sewn in velum wrappers with red suede tie, black paper endpapers, housed in protective box of stiff paper with cloth ties, designed to resemble a well-worn library enclosure for a rare book with "Rare Book Handle with Care" and "Not to Circulate" stamped on front cover, spine with labels - one circular with numbers, rectangular with red border reading 'Rare Book Reference" followed by numbers, title in small typeface, "HERetic / joan of arc" on red bordered label, followed by smaller label with numbers, the images of coffee or tea cup stains imprinted on the inner folds of the case, fine. The left pages are text from "Le Ditie de Jehanne d'Arc" by Christine de Pizan, a French poetess who wrote in 1429 when Joan was at the height of her successful campaign. It celebrates Joan of Arc's life and achievements. On the right facing pages, are various images of Joan of Arc with comments printed in red outlining her brief history. The pages covering her trial for heresy incorporate her own words. These are printed in gold below the red and are taken from the trial document. Printed by Acme Bookbinding on the HP Indigo Press 5500, the fonts used are German Latin (sepia) for the text by Christine de Pizan, Uncial (red) for the history, William Shakespeare for the numerals, and 10th Century Bookhand (gold) for the words of Joan of Arc. The images of Joan of Arc, paired with the at once glorious and tragic words, documenting this young girl's brief history and struggle with the male power structure of the time, tell their tragedy with a 1-2 punch. A strong feminist statement artfully rendered.

Artist's book, one of 26 numbered copies, all on Hahnemuhle paper, each numbered and signed by the artist in pencil on the final page. Page size: 4-7/8 x -5- 9/16 inches closed and 19" long when opened, 6pp. Bound: accordion style with red printed canvas covers, the front cover printed with etching after Gustave Dore with Krause's addition of the hat painted red, and the title, LITTLE RED A CAUTIONARY TALE FOR GIRLS OF ALL AGES, housed in black paper envelope. The text is printed on the 4 front pages at the bottom of the images, "Sometimes, I explain, it's hard to tell the difference between the ones who love you and the ones who will eat you alive." It is also printed the 2 pages on the reverse which contain a more significant portion of text from Ms. Steiber's poem above an image of a doll, in greys and brown, sprawled below the text. The doll, the artist tells the reader / viewer, is one that she had as a child. When turned upside down, the little red riding hood doll is a wolf, in grandmother's clothing, with a music box embedded in her back that played "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf."The text is printed three accordion pieces at a time, front and then back, on a large-format HPZ3100 inkjet printer, then cut apart and assembled. The artist has modified the 1869 Dore etchings by highlighting the caps worn by "Little Red" and the wolf in red. Ms. Krause has created a witty update of this traditional child's fairy tale by pairing Ms. Steiber's 1994 poem with the well-known 1869 Dore images, slyly manipulated to be completely contemporary.

Artist's book, one of 35 copies, all on hand-made linen paper by Dieu Donne Papermill and Mylar, each numbered, and signed and dated by the artist, Fran Siegel, and signed in Persian by the translator, Zahra Partovi. Page size: 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches; 26 leaves. Bound: as desk calendar on stainless steel base, made by Milgo Bufkin, four screws fastening the two "rings" that hold the pages of the book, housed in custom-made grey cloth over boards clamshell box, box by BookLab II. The titlepage and colophon are printed by Jerry Kelly in black and silver with Kelly's own calligraphy. Ms. Siegal's lithographs were printed in silver on the white transparent linen by Kelly Driscoll. Each page of linen is followed by a silver Mylar page. Each etching was not re-inked when repeated on the silver Mylar page resulting in a shadow image. The text is laser cut. It appears first in Ms. Partovi's elegant Persian calligraphy at the top and bottom of each page with the circular litho surrounding circular disc cut into each page, "reading" as silver against the succeeding silver Mylar page. It is followed by her flowing English translation on the silver Mylar page. This English text appears at the top and bottom of each page, and "reads" as white from the following linen page. It can be read through the linen page, just below and above where the Persian calligraphic lines appear. The circular cut-outs on each page are successively smaller; the final cut on the colophon page reveals the stainless steel base. Combinations of four different inks were used to print each of the lithographs resulting in each page appearing slightly darker as the concentric "circles" become smaller. Ms. Partovi's translated lines, "When he summons me I behold myself! Unsightly or worthy of the magnetism?" or "How now can I see my own face?" are perfectly translated in this book. Whoever reads the text sees their own image reflected in the silver Mylar. It is at once disconcerting and yet to the point of Rumi's search for illumination and union with God.One of the central figures of Islamic culture, Rumi (1207-1273) only recently began to emerge as a poet of significance to Westerners. Zahra Partovi, the translator, who now teaches the poetry of Rumi at The New School for Social Research, is widely acknowledged as one of the leading interpreters of his work for English-speaking readers. She has collaborated with Vincent FitzGerald on 11 previous limited editions of Rumi's work. Her own words on the significance of Rumi's poetry explain her work. "...the most remarkable biographical information about Jalaluddin Rumi's life is not the appearance and disappearance of the mystic Shams, but Rumi's imperative and conscious decision to make a change in his career from a Sufi teacher to a poet. Here the medium is truly the message: the most successful Sufi teacher of all times with countless devoted followers chooses to communicate through the path of poetry. This masterful poet combines philosophy, mysticism, and psychology in a language so piercing as to enter the realm of music. It is this element more than any other which has made Rumi's poetry so irresistible to readers for over seven hundred years, even through the fire of translation." The United Nations designated 2007 as the year of Rumi - a singular distinction for this 13th century Persian poet. He has, in recent years, been the best-selling poet in the United States. Fran Siegel, currently a Professor of Drawing and Painting at California State University Long Beach, graduated from Yale with an MFA and Temple's Tyler School of Art. She has had numerous solo exhibitions, as well as group shows, and was the US Representative at the IX International Bienal of Cuenca Ecuador. Her collaboration with Vincent FitzGerald & Company results in an astonishing book. The other collaborators include Kelly Driscoll, who created the art for FRAGMENTS OF LIGHT II and Milgo Bufkin (stainless steel base) who has worked with well-known visual artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Robert Indiana. Well-known printer and book designer, Jerry Kelly, has worked with FitzGerald for over 25 years, helping produce very beautiful books. The Dieu Donne paper used for this book is incredibly strong and yet translucent. Mr. FitzGerald, once again, has assumed the role of "Maestro" for these individual performers, leading and coordinating their elegant performance for our benefit.

Artist's Book, one of 5 Artist's Proof copies, from a total issue of 40, 20 copies of the book and 20 copies of the prints available for purchase separately, all signed and numbered by the artist, Mandy Bonnell. Page size: 8-1/2 x 11-15/16 inches; 20pp. Bound by Elisabeth Neville, accordion style, with black paper, lino printed in silver gilt, over boards, linoleum cuts by Mandy Bonnell, housed in matching publisher's slipcase of black paper, printed in silver gilt, over boards. The text is printed letterpress by Graham Bignell at New North Press in Condensed Sans Serif 5 for the text and wood type for the titlepage. Ms. Bonnell editioned the 12 etchings and collaged them to each page with small tabs of black paper printed with ochre stripes - obviously inspired by African textiles. The colophon page includes etched organic images printed in grey. Each page is reinforced at the hinge with a black fabric stamped with tiny silver gilt stripes. The poem reads, "Long after the life's gone out of them / like the ghosts of rain through a ruin / the beached shells frame / a congealed absence- / small-holdings of silence / where the sea comes spilling in." This text is printed on black paper 6 times, in grey with one line of the text printed in silver gilt, starting with the first line for the first page and going to line 2 for the 2nd page, etc. On the last page, where the last line is printed in silver gilt, the author's name also appears in gilt, and it is all printed over large woodtype letters spelling "Life / of / She / lls" that appear in grey. The etchings are small and intricate, beautifully detailed, and play off the subtly-printed black text page. Our fascination with shells, our conviction that their beauty is enduring, is captured by Ms. Bonnell's elegant images as well as her intricate book design. Mr. Gbadamosi's words reinforce the visual component. The whole book is the integration of words and images that artist's books should be. Ms. Bonnell's C.V. includes a degree from the Royal College of Art and solo exhibitions at the RaMoMa Museum of Modern Art in Nairobi Kenya as well as the renowned Eagle Gallery in London and Teaching Fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Tate Gallery, and, more recently, an Artist in Residence award from the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Her work is held by several international institutions include the Yale Center for British Art and was particularly featured in that institution's well-received 2004 exhibition, "Ocean Flowers"Gabriel Gbadamosi, a graduate of Churchill College, Cambridge with an Honors degree in English, has been active as an international playwright, performer and education for the past 25 years. He was leading artist and facilitator in the Sustained Theatre initiative as well as Chair of their conference in 2005-6. He has been awarded the AHRC Creative and Performing Arts Fellowship in European, African and British playwriting, the Pinter Centre, Goldsmiths College, University of London and is published as an essayist and poet.
