Artist's book, one of 100 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist / author, Julie Chen. Size: 9-3/4 x 20-1/2 inches; 2 double-page panorama pop-ups and 3 gate-fold panoramas each with 5 vertical folds to open and, when completely open, form another page and vista entirely. Bound: charcoal gray cloth over boards with title printed in black on gold colored paper, demi-lune gold and red paper onlay at front hinge, housed in gray cloth box with magnetized flaps to securely close, title printed on front of box in black on gold paper, newThe definition of PANORAMA - "A picture representing a continuous scene, often exhibited one part at a time" - opens the text, facing a sepia-toned image of an urban location. The gate fold opens to a center page showing the earth and bears the legend, "you are here" with "optimism" on the left side of the page and "despair" on the right side. The flaps on the center page each open to reveals several clocks superimposed one on the other and the text reads, "In this room / in this city / on this planet / at this moment in time / you are in denial / you cannot bring yourself to see the magnitude of the situation / you do not want to believe that time is running out." The pop-ups are four layered and each contains text reflecting the fragile nature of our environment. The closing page reads, "Your habitat is in peril / Take a serious look at the truth about the world around you / The planet will endure long after you are gone / What matters now is whether you will think beyond your own survival / and respond to the challenges that await you."Printed letterpress from wood blocks and photopolymer plates by Julie Chen and Alan Hillesheim and assembled at the studios of Flying Fish Press by Julie Chen, Erin Latimer, and Kimi Taira, this is a remarkable book. Just when you think that this artist can't possibly eclipse her previous work, she does. The environmental catastrophe that awaits the earth is clearly delineated - pictures and interacting with text make it impossible to ignore the message. This is an important new work from one of the best artists working today.

All elements are printed letterpress with the exception of the Ledger with is printed offset lithography. The game pieces and box are laser cut and fabricated at Flying Fish Press. The "Rules of Play" tell us that the object of the game is twofold: first to have the player create a meaningful abstract composition on the game board based on the examination of one area of their life and second, to have the player participate in an ongoing collaborative documentary book project by recording his or her composition in the ledger.Once again, Julie Chen has created a fantastic book object with text that demands interaction from the reader / viewer / PLAYER. Her books are always a commentary of contemporary life - provocative and innovative - as the very best books are. Her desire to communicate with her audience - thereby involving them in the creative process - gives us all a chance to "think like an artist."

One of 100 copies, all on Wyndstone Marble papers, each signed and numbered by Julie Chen. Page size: 10-1/2 x 4-1/4" at widest part, 2-1/4" at narrowest; four page spreads. Bound by Julie Chen and Anna Sacramento: hand-sewn rust and tan cloth with green paper lattice on front board; four layers of cut paper (green, blue, silver blue, and tan) each unfolding to oval shape from the half-oval of closed book. The book can be displayed as a standing sculpture with all four pages facing outward, with the front and back covers touching. Covers embedded with magnets to keep book open in this position. The papers have been cut using a Universal Systems Lasercutter. The printing was letterpress using a combination of photo-polymer plates and collagraphic blocks. Ms. Chen's poem reads, "An obstructed view of the world / The unheard story / The unseen face / A conscious decision to shield our eyes / Hiding behind words, Protecting our fears / Wearing a veil of untold sorrow". These words appear printed in brown on a gold banner on a green ground printed to resemble lace. Behind that is a blue paper cut to resemble lattice, behind that a globe and behind that on tan printed in brown, words from the preamble to the Charter of the United Nations which was written, in part, by Virginia Crocheron Gildersleeve (1877-1965), American academic, the sole female US delegate to the San Francisco United Nations Charter Conference in 1945. Housed in dark blue, rust, and tan cloth box with green paper lattice print inlaid to mimic gates, with title printed in silver on green and silver printed paper. Box opens in the middle to reveal the book laid into a half oval cutout, the title, press, and date printed in brown on gold paper completing the oval on the left of the inserted book. The colophon is printed on the inside of the box below the book, in silver on dark green paper. The inside of the box flaps are lined with green and silver printed papers, in lace-like pattern, which is the same decorated paper on the cover of the box. An extraordinary production from Flying Fish Press. Ms. Chen's beautiful book - which can be displayed as a three-dimensional piece - is a strong feminist statement expressed with words and images.

One of 100 copies, each signed and numbered on the inside of the box by the author, artist, and designer, Julie Chen. Box: 13-3/4 x 6-1/4 x 4-3/4 inches, wrapped in dull gold and oyster white Japanese book cloths with title printed in black on green paper label; closure in green paper and oyster-colored book cloth over book board with title printed in black; closure with magnet and corresponding magnet in case. The box contains two books: MISE EN SCENE and AFTERIMAGE, both printed letterpress. MISE EN SCENE is printed on a single long sheet of gray paper with laser cut outs. The page is inserted between the top lighter gray paged and the bottom gray-green page. The cut-out text on gray paper gives the illusion of floating freely in space when the book is opened. MISE EN SCENE is bound accordion style with green cloth over boards with a lighter gray-green cloth and paper label in green printed with title in black and sewn with gray thread on the exterior edge. AFTERIMAGE text is printed in black on gray-green paper that is bound accordion style between double fold of green paper silkscreen printed with tree limbs in darker green. The text is behind Mylar and appears in laser cutouts in the page spread. The two books are housed on each side of the box. In the center of the box is a still life of water and trees. This diorama is made of concrete, resin with trees made for architectural models and is behind Plexiglas that is hinged at the top and can be opened from the bottom.Once again, Ms. Chen has created an intricate book / object. The execution is flawless, but not simply as a display of virtuosity. Rather, the physical object is designed to engage the reader / viewer in conveying her text, and she succeeds admirably.
