Artist's book, one of 10 copies, each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, Laura Davidson, on the colophon. Page size: 6-13/16 inches x 5-7/16 inches; 10pp. + frontis woodcut and colophon as endpapers. There are two pages pop-up prints, and 4 other pages of original prints. Bound by the artist: black cloth with title inset on front panel on cream stock printed in gray, fine. The artist states in the colophon that she intends this book to be a tribute to Giovanni Braccelli, who in 1624 in Livorno, created a series of etchings in a book called BIZZARIE DI VARIE FIGURE. She examined one of the two surviving copies at the Library of Congress, and the playful, acrobatic and quite modern figures of Braccelli stayed with her. She has reinterpreted them here as pop-up elements made from original prints accomplished in gray ink, the first two with the added elements of copper links and white string.

The artists has scanned pages from an 1893 Italian Baedeker and then added to the resulting pages with collaged woodcuts, woodcuts and linoleum cuts printed over the Baedeker page, i.e. print of table set with wine, glasses and artichoke on plate, over the entry for "restaurants" as a fold-over page and print. Following the entry for the Vatican is a double page woodcut of the top of the Vatican roof with the disciples outlined against the sky. The Biblioteca Vaticana entry is cut out with a woodcut of an old book collaged to the page with opens to a picture of the library. Other collages are found - always put in strategic places guaranteed to bring a smile to the reader. The colophon is headed with S.P.Q.R. The colophon is completed by a linoleum cut of a traditional espresso pot in black printed on gray paper and collaged at the bottom of the page.

Artist's Book, one of 25 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist, all on rives BFK and Frankfurt cream paper. Page size: 6-1/2 x 4-3/4". Bound: wood boards with leather spine, boards carved and painted representing Galileo's heliocentric celestial spheres. New. Illustrated with 17 linoleum prints of images, maps and text, some hand colored, of tools, navigation, astronomy, nature, and engineering. The artist tells us that USEFUL KNOWLEDGE is inspired by years of curiosity about early science. "When I look at a rare book the text is often incomprehensible to me, because of the language or letter form. The book, then, becomes a while visual object, rather than something that needs to be read to be understood." One of the pages holds a volvelle (movable circle) for astronomical calculations. A lovely book and book object.
