Doors to the Saints: A Calendar of Women Saints.
McCarthy, Mary and Shirley Veenema.

Boston, MA: 2010. Unique artists' books, one of two in a series, 12 in each set, the saint produced twice in different styles, each saint behind a "door" or cover which opens to reveal an image of the woman, with the biography on the back of the image, in hand-written text in gold and silver metallic inks, all on various papers, with acrylic paint and cotton cloth, each piece signed by both artists. Page size: 8.5 x 6 x .5 inches; each woman saint placed in a shallow box with door attached to left side of box. The set of 12 women saints are housed in a tan cloth over boards box that has two doors opening in the middle, fastened with matching tie closure, and further fastened with embedded magnets on the sides of the fall down box. The individual boxes are all made of Brillianta tweed cloth over binder's board and lined with handmade paper and acrylic for the actual paper doors. The Feast day (death date), all arranged by calendar months, is on the exterior of the door, the saint and her patronage is on the interior door and the saint's story is on the back panel. Art and dress of the time of each saint was used as reference for design images. Their stories vary. Some were treated badly because of their faith. Others were treated badly because they were women. Some were beautiful and wealthy and unwilling to succumb to the wishes of men. All were willing to sacrifice their life for their faith. Their stories are the stories of women's lives over the past two centuries. Among those included are Mother Seton, Brigid of Kildare, Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene, Hildegarde of Bingen, Winefride, and Catherine of Siena. A fascinating and beautiful story of women's lives of the past two thousand years. (Item ID: 10317)
