Complete archive of original art, each board is hand collaged of various papers, including Moriki red and grey papers and pastepapers for the hummingbird's wings and tail feathers, Kozo papers which have been dyed in diluted red acrylic baths and then collaged as flower petals, among other papers; 16 story boards, each signed and numbered by the artist / author, Mary McCarthy, which served as manuscript for her children's book, A CLOSER LOOK published by Greenwillow Books / HarperCollins Publishers (2007). This title was awarded the Baker's Dozen Award from the Pennsylvania Center for the Book (Penn State) as well as being cited in 2007 by the New York Public Library in their 100 Books for Children exhibition. One of these original pieces of art was exhibited in the show at the New York Public Library and another in the Illustration Museum in New York. Page size: 21 x 12 inches; 16 pieces of original art, all but one mounted on board, which the publisher photographed for the pages of this charming children's book. The text reads, "Look! / What do you... / see? / A bug. / Look / What do you... / see? / A flower. / Look... / What do you... / see?" with a final page describing ladybugs, cardinal flowers, and hummingbirds, images of which are featured in the previous pages of the book. The text Is supplied - with the line breaks and type size. Housed in red cloth fall-back box with tie-button closures. The artist / author has used three simple elements - ladybugs, cardinal flowers, and hummingbirds - to introduce pre-schoolers to the first step in the scientific method: observation. By magnifying the back of a ladybug and then increasing the distance from the viewer a simple abstraction of a black circle on a red ground becomes a living creature. Original manuscript art for a noted children's book (still in print) is uncommon, and this is also very beautiful. Together with a copy of the trade book. (Item ID: 10305)
