Estanislao del Campo (1834-1880) is one of the most popular Argentine poets; his gaucho-burlesque poem - here reprinted - is his most popular work. The CARTA tells of Anastasio the Chicken who, by chance, attends a performance of Gounod’s FAUST. Unable to distinguish between reality and fiction, he takes the opera’s events to heart. The images herein - of Faust and the chicken-man are fabulous - a fantasy of unending imagination. (9724)

William Henry Hudson (1841-1922), author, ornithologist and naturalist, was born in Argentina to U.S. parents. At age 28 he moved to England where his ornithological titles earned him renown. This autobiographical reminiscence of his youth in Argentina rivals his novel, GREEN MANSIONS, as his best known work. His scholarly efforts were not eclipsed by his literary career. He was a founding member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and is a leading figure in the back-to-nature movement of the 1920’s and 1930’s. He is considered to belong to the national literature of the country of his birth, Argentina, and this extraordinary edition of his time there is a worthy homage. (9721)
