New from Michael Kuch’s Double
Elephant Press
Samson & Delilah – from Delilah’s
Viewpoint
14. Double Elephant Press. Kuch,
Michael. Disasters of Love - A Defense of Delilah.
Hadley, MA: Double Elephant Press, 2006.
$3,500

One of
60 copies, on various hand-made papers, signed by the artist
/ author, Michael Kuch. Page size: 17 inches x 12 inches.
Bound by Barry Spence: Coptic style, hinged at top, where
etchings rest as friezes above the paired columns of text,
collage on front cover with marbled paper pillars; between
its columns, etched eyes peer through scissor handles
snapping at a Bosch bagpipe bas-relief; housed in a box
which opens into an easel to view the book as it opens up.
The book consists of a poem, lithographs and intaglios, all
by Michael Kuch. The story of Samson and Delilah is retold
in Delilah’s voice. The etchings relate to the poem by myth
and metaphor; the entire Hebrew text from Judges is
incorporated into these intaglios. The book’s images
reference well-known historical works of art. Between the
columns of text, twelve lithographs from stone depict the
brutish Samson engaged in his Herculean labors. Printed on
translucent flax over Piranesian ruins, the last two columns
crumble. Handmade Czech text sheets were woven at the
fore-edge by strips of flax paper to make double-thick
pages. The letterpress was by Art Larson and set and cast by
Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari in 14 point Didot Lutetia and 12
point Bembo for a Biblical-text appendix. Between text
columns, Catherine Ulitsky fenestrated sheets for the
lithographs. The lithographs were pulled from stones by Tim
Sheesley on handmade gampi torinoko. The printing of the
intaglios was also by Art Larsen. This beautiful intriguing
book is a delight. (9803)

aquatints in EXODO by Mirta Kupferminc. Hand set and printed
letterpress in 12pt. Electra by Ruben R. Lapolla, the
edition was supervised by Samuel Cesar Palui and Ernesto
Lowenstein. These two companion volumes are extremely
beautiful and evocative of the creation and deliverance
stories. One does not so much read the text as enter into
the world of the Hebrews - perhaps due to the sand-colored
borders around the text or the placement of images in
relation to text. The original prints, vital and arresting,
offer a unique visualization of the oldest story. (9720)

The aquatints are
lovely. The first is of a child floating a paper boat and
the second a surreal cityscape. The image of the child
harmonizes perfectly with the verse making the connection
between the free expressions of the young with the efforts
of the Surrealists. Braulio Arenas (1913-1988) Chilean poet,
short story writer and dramatist, was awarded the National
Prize for Literature in 1984. Considered a key Chilean
surrealist, he was one of the founding members of the
Mandragora (Surreal group) in 1938. (9819)

The Masterpiece of the Press
18. Ediciones Dos Amigos. Borges,
Jorge Luis. El Aleph. Buenos Aires: Ediciones Dos
Amigos, 1997.
$27,500

One of
25 copies, but each copy unique, all printed on cream Velin
d’Arches paper. Etchings and aquatints by Gabriela
Aberastury, this copy one of the publisher’s copies,
unsigned and unnumbered. Page size: 13-¼ inches x 10
inches; 176pp; each page an original print, many times using
several different print processes. Bound: loose in original
gray wrappers blind-embossed with the titles of the 18
stories that are contained in the book, author, title in
dark gray printed on spine and front wrapper, housed in
gray cloth over boards clamshell box with original etching
on front of box, title printed in black on the spine, box a
bit dinged at edges, book fine. Started in 1984 and finished
13 years later under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui and
printed by Ruben R. Lapolla. Samuel Cesar Palui and Ernesto
Lowenstein published this book to commemorate the centenary
of the birth of Jorge Luis Borges in 1999. The artwork was
created by Gabriela Aberastury who editioned all the prints.
Rather than illustrate the text story by story, Aberastury
chose to explore and reveal the Borgesian universe. She used
different techniques: oil, acrylic, lacquer, engraving,
gofrado, and pencil. She worked with the typographer /
printer Ruben Lapolla to create pages that appear to have no
beginning and no end - that seem not to have been created
but rather revealed. One does not read this book as much as
completely enter another realm created by it and experience
this other world with several senses. The text is printed
using linotype with gold, silver, copper and black used to
create contrasts when the coloring of the paper required it.
Truly a masterpiece of book arts, it is completely original
and resembles no other book we’ve seen. (9722)
